Une anecdote personnelle est à l’origine de cette oeuvre. Quand Douglas Gordon vivait en Écosse, il dansait et chantait souvent la chanson de Jeanne Moreau Je suis le nombril du monde dans son appartement, jusqu’à ce que son colocataire lui demande un jour s’il savait ce que signifiait nombril en français.
Ce mot qu’il associe à une certaine idée de la culture française, rappelle les thèmes essentiels qui traversent l’oeuvre de Gordon, comme l’identité, l’amour et la haine, qu’il traite toujours avec humour et ambiguïté.
Douglas Gordon is exhibiting a new version of his piece in neon light Unfinished, first exhibited at Yvon Lambert Gallery in 2011, for which Gordon destroyed the words ‘Je suis le nombril du monde...’ [I am the navel of the world]. Here the words are intact, with only the ‘bril’ from ‘nombril’ fallen on the floor, humorously creating the sentence ‘Je suis le nom du monde’ [I am the name of the world’].
The piece has its origins in a personal anecdote. When Douglas Gordon was living in Scotland, in his apartment he often sang and danced to Jeanne Moreau’s song Je suis le nombril du monde, until his flatmate asked him one day if he knew what nombril meant in French.
This word, which he associates with a certain idea of French culture, recalls the essential themes that run through Gordon’s work, such as identity, love and hate, which he always treats with humour and ambiguity.
