This painting is characteristic of the style of Maryan’s American period. Created in 1969, the year he became a naturalized American citizen, it reflects the excesses of the consumerist American society that he discovered upon his arrival in the United States in 1962. This discovery brought about a major paradigm shift in his work: art then became a melting pot where personal history and the history of the world in which the artist evolved were mixed. The noisy chromatic palette goes hand in hand with hope and caustic humor.
Maryan will draw for a decade the paradoxes and the jolts. His daily American life is a powerful source of inspiration for him; he observes it, understands it and translates it with force. His “characters” compose an astonishing gallery of caricatured and grotesque portraits, where they stuff themselves with sweets, shout, smile, stick out their tongues, vomit... Under Maryan’s brush, art is shaped in the image of man by presenting itself to the viewer in a way that is as trivial as it is grandiose.
